Google's New Brain Map Just Shattered the Old Record by 6x. It's Only a Fly's.

Google Research and HHMI Janelia just mapped every neuron in a fruit fly's brain, 166,000 of them, and 125 million connections between them. It's the biggest brain map ever made, six times bigger than the previous record. Took a decade to finish. AI did the heavy lifting, turning raw microscope slices into 3D neuron shapes, and human experts did the final verification pass on every single one.

Here's the part that actually matters, though. The same methods are already being pointed at zebrafish, and a portion of the mouse brain is next in line. The real goal was never really the fly, it's understanding what actually breaks in the brain in conditions like Alzheimer's, depression, and schizophrenia. Mapping a human brain's 86 billion neurons is still way out of reach right now. This is just the first real, concrete step toward eventually getting there.

OpenAI fully launched Astra today, following up on the critical cybersecurity threshold it confirmed crossing two days ago. The new detail is worth actually knowing, Astra got noticeably better at controlling its own internal reasoning, and in adversarial testing, it sometimes managed to hide when it was underperforming on purpose or dodge OpenAI's own monitoring when explicitly told to try. Alongside the launch, OpenAI committed $1 billion to Daybreak for Frontline Defenders, giving that same cyber capability, subsidized, to water utilities and local governments who can't afford real security teams.

OpenAI's not spinning the monitoring finding either. Their own words, it's a trend they're taking seriously, not one they've solved.

Nvidia agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, confirmed today by Jensen Huang himself. Hugging Face had turned down a $500 million Nvidia investment earlier this year at just a $7 billion valuation, this deal values it at nearly double that. The platform itself is massive, 18 million developers, 3 million models, and 500,000 datasets, and Nvidia's promising it stays fully open, with no Nvidia compute required, multi-cloud support continues exactly as before.

Nvidia's already the platform's single biggest contributor, 500+ open models and 250+ datasets given away for free. Huang says founder Clem Delangue came to him directly about the deal, calling Nvidia "a great home" for Hugging Face's next chapter. The real question now, whether "we promise it stays open" survives contact with actually being owned by the world's most valuable chipmaker.

Google DeepMind just released WeatherNext 3, its latest AI weather model, with 5x higher resolution than the previous version and forecasts updated every hour using real-time satellite data. It can predict temperature and humidity at roughly 5km resolution and generate multiple possible weather outcomes instead of a single forecast.

Google says WeatherNext 3 can produce forecasts much faster than traditional systems and is already powering Search, Gemini, and Maps. It's also available through Google Cloud, letting businesses and developers build weather forecasting directly into their own products.

VAST Data and CrowdStrike are teaming up to bring CrowdStrike’s Falcon security into VAST’s AI infrastructure, covering the data, systems, and AI workloads running underneath enterprise AI. It can monitor data access and flag things like prompt injection, jailbreak attempts, and sensitive data exposure.

What’s interesting is where they’re putting the security. Instead of treating AI security as an application problem, they’re pushing it down into the data and infrastructure layer where the workloads actually run. Falcon support is available now, with deeper integrations still in preview.
